Louisville synagogue partners with nonprofit to support foster children

Comfort Cases® for kids in foster care news segment at a Packing Party

Congregation Adath Jeshurun in Louisville is making a significant impact by teaming up with Comfort Cases, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping foster children.

Volunteers packed backpacks with essential items like toothbrushes, shampoo, and soap, simple necessities that show children they are valued and cared for.

“Children in foster homes are in tremendous need. Anything we can do to make life even a little bit easier for them is well worthwhile,” said volunteer Rhoda Faller.

Comfort Cases founder Rob Scheer, who experienced foster care himself, explained the heartbreaking realities many of these children face.

“In Kentucky, we have roughly 8,000 children in the system, and they are handed a trash bag. No hope, no dignity,” said Rob Scheer.

This effort seeks to change that narrative, instilling a sense of dignity through small, meaningful gestures.

250 Comfort Cases® will be donated to local organizations like Boys and Girls Haven and Home of the Innocents.

Director of Outreach of Home of the Innocents, Shelby Allen, stressed the importance of these items, noting that families they assist often lack the basic necessities.

“Each and every day, we meet the needs of many different children and families,” Allen said.

Rabbi Scott Hoffman of Congregation Adath Jeshurun highlighted the community’s role in fostering change. “Having the real sense that something I did will directly contribute to the well-being of another person, there’s no feeling like that in the world,” said Hoffman.

To date, Comfort Cases has provided 265,000 backpacks to children across the country.

“When you invest in a child, you actually invest in our future,” said Scheer.
