Topeka Correctional residents volunteer to fill packs for children in foster care
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A non-profit teamed up with a pair of Kansas agencies to help the people involved with both.
Comfort Cases provides backpacks for children in the foster care system, and got some help putting the packs together from residents in the Topeka Correctional Facility.
Residents say they find their own reward in helping others.
“It just feels good to give yourself something to do that’s a positive thing and realize that you’re also a good person on the inside that can share and give love to other people,” Marissa, one of the volunteers, said.
Comfort Cases says over 700 kids enter the foster care system every day in the U.S.
“They enter because of a choice someone else made,” Comfort Cases Founder Rob Scheer said. “So here in Topeka, we’re going to do something different. We’re not going to give them a trash bag. we’re going to give them hope and dignity through a backpack. And in those backpacks we’re putting all the essentials items that every young person deserves to have.”
The packs include pajamas, hygiene kits, and blankets and stuffed animals hand-crafted by volunteers from TCF.
